As the modern digital world has taken over people’s lives on a daily basis, it has become harder for people in general to have some time to themselves without the constant tweeting, posting, and blogging all over the media. In a way, psychologically, social media has become another form of bullying, according to stopbullying.org, they say, “social media sites can be used for positive activities…but these tools can also be used to hurt other people. Whether done in person or through technology, the effects of bullying are similar.”
I think the song “Wake Me Up” sung by electronic musician and DJ Avicii, explains itself through the lyrics on how we can end up frozen in time (wherever we are). In the video link I’ve provided of the official video of the song, one sees the protagonist with her (I assume) little sister, settling in a place where the community does not seem to accept them. I feel that the video portrays such a setting really well and I’m sure many of us have found ourselves in a similar, if not the same, situation (e.g. moving into a new neighborhood, school etc.).
One can also notice how even when the young woman is partying with her friends she takes out her phone and takes a group picture. This has become one of the new norms in our daily lives, taking pictures of what we are up to. Compared to how society did not have this instant communication back in the late 19th century, this is quite something.
Things to think about when listening to “Wake Me Up” are: Where do we stand in this modern digital world? Does it really benefit us in being connected to one another or does it isolate us? As the song’s lyrics may imply; Are we just following societal norms in a sort of limbo without realizing the loss of our individuality?
